Enchanted Everyday Spiritualities with Dr Sara MacKian
Whilst our ancestors might have spoken to the spirits to lift the curse of disease, cast a spell to invoke wealth or asked the angels for protection, such ideas are usually dismissed in today’s ‘rational’ society. Yet spirituality is re-embracing the magical and otherworldly with very real consequences for those who practice, and Sara’s research takes seriously the extraordinary experiences that arise from this. Here she talks about her new book ‘Everyday Spirituality’ (Palgrave Macmillan), based on fieldwork with mediums, psychics, angel healers and Tarot readers, and she calls for us to put ‘spirit’ back at the heart of spirituality.
Dr Sara MacKian has a PhD from University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and is currently a senior lecturer in health and wellbeing at The Open University.

Seeing Mary with Dr Chris Maunder
The Virgin Mary is one of the most popular and beloved figures in Christianity. There are several sightings of apparitions of Mary recorded in the historical record, and the sites in which these apparitions were received have gained considerable spiritual significance. Reports of seeing Mary have been transformative for the experient, community and for the landscape against which such experiences occurred. Dr Maunder will guide us through the wondrous history of Marian apparitions, and consider the ongoing relevance of these experiences and their associated shrines.
Dr Chris Maunder is head of the BA Theology and Religious Studies at York St John University. He is the editor of Origins of the Cult of the Virgin Mary (2008) and a member of the Centre for Marian Studies. Last year he published his first novel, Calling, which reflects his interest in apparitions, Mary, and new, popular forms of spirituality.
